Yeah. Opinions. Usually unpopular ones.

we have literally created our own dialogue? language? here on tumblr and i think that is the most amazing thing ever
please disregard my shitty editing skills
no listen this is actually really amazing because this is a real thing. i think this counts as a pidgin language. a pidgin language is basically a changed, simplified version of a language. you can change the spellings of words, pronunciation, grammar rules, or even make up new words. i think. i’d have to research it a bit more to be sure but i’m 90% sure this is right. if its not a pidgin language, then its a lingua franca but thats more used for trade and stuff like that. but still a new language. so yes, we’ve created our own language. we’ve changed the whole sentence structure. we can trail off sentences, say things like “i just cant”, and use words like ship, OTP, fic, fandom, feels, and ship names and everyone will understand what you’re saying. the part that i love most is how people go “OMGH IM CRIIY NIG SOIOO HARD” and understand each other. for example “IM LIUA GHMNIG”. that one was incredibly easy, but if you knew that said “I’m laughing”, congratulations. You speak a pidgin language. we can even say stuff like “Does anyone know of a Johnlock fic, at least 20k words, not a WIP, with no OCs, and is Post-Reichenbach? Or just a Destiel PWP would be great.” To someone not on tumblr, that wouldn’t make any sense. but you understood, didn’t you? One characteristic of a pidgin language is that you have to learn it like a second language. Another characteristic is that it is frequently changing. tumblr goes through many trends with how we talk. if i remember correctly, when i first made an account about two years ago, talking like this wasn’t quite as common. also, that thing of suddenly capitalizing your sentence is fairly recent. you know, when people go “the new epISODE IS TOMORROW”. Like one of the people up there said, all of this is awesome because how else do you easily show emotion and tone over the internet? we’ve even made a whole sense of humour that most people here share in. There’s so much more that I could talk about with this, but i’m tired and i may be entirely wrong about everything. but yes. people on the fandom side of tumblr who speak like this are speaking a new language
Speaks: English, Finnish, and Tumblr.
remember when grant first got on set and him and chris flirted on twitter like a bajillion times
I get this and yeah, I agree, it is so easy to see these two houses in those terms from the surface. But I have a couple things to point out.
1) Frankly, HP is not a story about the Slytherins. HP is very Gryffindor focused because it is about a Gryffindor, and his friends, who are Gryffindors, and his family and family friends, who are mostly Gryffindors. And these Gryffindors’ actions have not all been painted as lovely and quaint by any means. If we look at all of the underhanded shit that Gryffindors have done in the series, I don’t think that they were all intended to be justified by any means. I don’t think Ron’s abandonment of his best friends was downplayed, nor was James’ treatment of Snape as a teenager (we are routinely reminded of how fucked up Harry believed it was). Pretty sure we were supposed to see Mrs. Weasley’s random bout of antagonism against Hermione in GoF to be pretty petty and juvinle, not to mention Percy’s “family betrayal.” And when all is said and done, I’m pretty sure that the majority of Gryffindor house were painted as pretty dickish PLENTY of times when they seemed to (along with the rest of the school, tbh) virtually shun Harry for any given amount of time (Cos, Gof, OotP). Oh and then there is the whole, well, Peter Pettigrew’s EVERYTHING so yeah.
2) Some of this shit comes with the territory of being set in a fantasy setting. I mean, I’m sorry but with this logic we can say that James attempted to murder Snape during SWM when he filled his mouth with soap. This is a magic school, where you can be put away into a vanishing cabinet and get turned into a ferret and make someone’s head inflate for jokes and it really isn’t a huge deal because it is magic and you can get that shit fixed like it is gonna be ok. The lack of long term repercussions isn’t so much due to bias as it is due to the fact that the physical action of those pranks are seen largely as magical mischief above all else. It’s things like that where applying some real life zero tolerance policy isn’t really all that necessary.
The only thing in the aforementioned that I think is actually fucked up beyond ~lol magical mischief~ is Sirius’ prank, but I never got the impression that we were supposed to see that as something that wasn’t a big deal when there was so much at stake and James ended up saving Snape’s life.
If you ask me, the biggest ball that was dropped wrt Slytherin’s portrayal was the fact that not a single one was in Dumbledore’s Army. THAT would have been brilliant and it would have made a strong statement, and JKR should have included something along those lines IMO. But with regards to everything else? Frankly I am not too broken up about Slytherin having a shitty reputation when their house was built on a fucked up, blood supremacist ideology. And I’m saying this as somebody who considers herself a Slytherin when all is said and done.
Yo, good points. There’s really no arguing against the Gryffindor bias in the books, but it really isn’t something to get worked up about because yeah, when it all boils down to it, this is a story about Harry Potter and a bunch of fellow Gryffindors. Who did a lot of heroic things and made some mistakes and vanquished some evil and it’s all perfectly dandy.
But the problem with Slytherin’s shitty reputation is that all of its members get held accountable for the fucked up ideology that it was built upon, and then the books end, and nobody bothers to refute this. Slytherin himself was a first-rate asshole, and the Death Eaters basically took his ideology and ran with it, but you don’t get sorted into Slytherin because you’re a racist blood supremacist and eat dark magic for breakfast, you get sorted into Slytherin because of character traits that are neither inherently good nor inherently evil. And just as that balance was shown in Gryffindor, it should have at least been touched upon in Slytherin.
A Slytherin joining Dumbledore’s Army really would have been brilliant. Just one legitimately good Slytherin, no secret intentions, no inner struggle with ”Oh what will my friends think?” The rest of the DA would be suspicious but that shit would be dissolved in five seconds and life would go on, because non-asshole Slytherins should be treated as a normality rather than an exception.
